Small Plates are Back: Take a Class with Atlanta Ballet’s John Welker this Month!
Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education and Zoetic Dance Ensemble are pleased to announce the 2014 roster for Small Plates, an educational collaboration serving up new ideas and inspirations in contemporary dance.
Small Plates is a curated series of workshops offered through the Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education's Open Adult Division on Thursdays from 7:30 – 9pm at the Michael C. Carlos Dance Centre in West Midtown.
For the 2014 series, Small Plates artists will explore the concept of PAIRINGS to generate ideas and inspirations for classwork and new dances. PAIRINGS are described as arrangements or matches resulting from organizing people or things into pairs. Whether we approach our work from a point of contrast and opposition or in harmony and accord, key tensions are created when diverse ideas come together. Small Plates artists will have an opportunity to show the dances created during each workshop at Dance Chance, a monthly showcase of new work in contemporary dance organized by local artist Sean Hilton. Dance Chance offers choreographers a platform to experiment with their work and create a piece for monthly performances at Atlanta Ballet’s Centre for Dance Education.
Small Plates begins in January with John Welker, long-time artist with Atlanta Ballet and creative leader of Wabi Sabi, a contemporary dance project that pushes the boundaries of ballet. John’s workshop series will consist of contemporary movement centered on the premise of empowering the performer within a choreographic setting to enhance the process and performance. Movement styles will shift across technique boundaries and concentrate on the dynamic flow of energy in, on, and above the floor. As John says, “Small Plates allows me the opportunity to further explore dance as a language with other artists who share my passion. Any chance to learn and gain experience is a chance for new possibilities that would otherwise be unseen and therefore unrealized."
